Sidestage Tumblr

The official Tumblr for the bi-monthly online indie music zine, sidestage (sidestagezine.com). This Tumblr is for all the stuff we can't fit in the zine proper - songs, videos, extra pictures, and snippets from forthcoming issues.

Audio, image and video killed the magazine star.

Contributors: Natasha, Kate.
Idea developed with Conor.

If we've posted something you'd rather we didn't, get in contact with us and we'll take it down. We're easy like that.

Red Riders - ‘Slide In Next To Me’

Natasha and I go way back with these guys - in, uh, various ways. They were one of the only Australian bands we supported really solidly in our younger days / when we were working on our previous magazine, Arcady.

As much as it pains us to say so, since the band lost co-frontman Adrian, things just haven’t been the same. But regardless! Today in JMag, I read about one girl who nominated ‘Slide In Next To Me’ as one of the sexiest songs ever, namely for its bassline. Natasha and I have long maintained this very position, and we think you should, too. You’ll see why.

Sunset Rubdown - You Go On Ahead (Trumpet Trumpet II)

I would like to just follow you awhile

From the new album Dragonslayer. I hate to overuse the word “epic”, but it is completely appropriate here.

when me and the boys were out
    we killed a thousand butterflies
so I put their wings into my mouth and said a prayer for our safe arrival

    So, so epic.

Sunset Rubdown - ‘Idiot Heart’ (Daytrotter Session, 2007)

I said you can’t, can’t settle down, until the Icarus in your blood, in your blood drowns

This has been one of my favourite Sunset Rubdown songs for a while. The final recorded version appears on their brand new album, Dragonslayer, which will be released on June 23 (or is available to illegally downloaded right now, not that we condone such flagrant flaunting of the law.. ahem.)

The Libertines - ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’

I’ll take you anywhere you wanna go

I know, for my one audio post of the day, I could’ve picked something off Up The Bracket, and perhaps I should have, but there’s just something about ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’ that draws you in and holds you in its grasp forever. It’s bitter and sad but nostalgic and full of love all at the same time. It’s probably also one of the best examples of how clever, how biting and sharp Pete and Carl’s lyrical back-and-forths can be, with Carl’s sighed an ending fitting for the start / you twist and tore our love apart and Pete’s wide-eyed but cheeky response: no, you’ve got it the wrong way round / just shocked me up and blamed it on the brown. Plus, the guitar’s really bloody catchy, innit?

Dappled Cities (Fly) - ‘The Price’

something should be holding us back / something should be weighing us down

Dappled’s brand new song, and a good one, at that.

The Australian music scene could really do with their new album.
